FAQ
Who receives my application?
California Truck Driver Schools will pass on your application to the truck driving schools and training programs that best fit your needs, based on the information you provide on the application.
Are there any specific requirements I must meet?
There are some federal requirements set by the DOT (Department of Transportation) that must be met:
- Drivers must obtain a Class A CDL (commercial driver's license)
- Drivers must be at least 21 years old and have U.S. citizenship.
- Drivers must have a valid state driver's license and be able to speak English well enough to communicate with the general public.
In addition, most trucking companies have their own set of requirements that their truck drivers and employees must meet.
What are the physical requirements?
According to federal law, every truck driver in the United States must complete the Department of Transportation physical exam prior to employment and periodically thereafter. The exam is given to make sure there are no existing conditions or health concerns of the driver that may interfere with the safe handling of a commercial vehicle. Visit http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov to see what the exact requirements of the exam are.
Is relocation required?
We will put you in touch with truck driving schools within your area so no relocation is required. However, if you wish to go somewhere else, we can match you with truck driving schools in the area of your choice.
What does it cost to apply?
There is no cost. Submitting an application is 100% free of charge.
How soon will I start hearing from truck driving schools after submitting my application?
Answer times will vary between different companies, but most will contact you within 24 to 48 hours after obtaining your application.
Can I submit more than one application?
One application should be sufficient; we will send your application to as many truck driving schools that match your needs based on the information you provide. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your application, please contact us.
I have a felony or misdemeanor charge; can I still apply?
There are some trucking companies and training programs that will hire individuals with past felonies or misdemeanors. It is crucial that you are honest about any past convictions on your application so we can accurately match you with schools and companies willing to hire you.
How much does truck driving school cost?
The total cost of training will vary between programs; however, many companies offer tuition reimbursement and paid training that you can "work off" by driving for them. Many programs also offer financial assistance to help you cover all training expenses.
What should I look for in a truck driving school?
There are a number of benefits and "perks" many schools offer that you can take advantage of. Many will provide lodging and transportation to the training site for students who are not from the area. Inquire if they offer financial aid, signing bonuses, or guaranteed job placement. Also make sure you will receive adequate training; average training lasts anywhere from three to five weeks and should consist of classroom instruction coupled with driving training. Most programs will pair students with an experienced driver to get experience behind-the-wheel.
